University of Illinois and Zhejiang University Research Apprenticeship ProgramStudents from Zhejiang University in China participate in a six-week research internship at the University of Illinois. Students spend their time completing a research project with their respective faculty members in the College of ACES, learn about graduate schools in the U.S., and immerse themselves in American culture through industry-focused tours in Chicago and St. Louis. Dairy Management: USDA-FAS Iraq FellowsJawad Al-Ali and Firas Mahmood, two USDA Foreign Agriculture Service (FAS) Iraqi Fellows, spent eight weeks during February and March of 2011 in the College of ACES with Dr. Mike Hutjens, Jim Baltz, and Travis Michel to learn more about modern dairy production practices by taking part in online course work, hands-on experiences at the U of I Dairy Farm, and touring various facilities across the state. Later that spring, a five-day training program was presented in Iraq to approximately 30 dairy industry people to teach them how to develop dairy tools that Iraqi producers can utilize. |

Food Technology: Russian Delegates from Pacific State University of EconomicsFrom December 2-9, 2010, the Office of International Programs hosted four Pacific State University of Economics delegates from Russia. The delegates, whose research specialties focus on food technology, participated in a training program on campus through a grant they received from the Russian government. This provided them with an opportunity to enhance their knowledge of food technology and pursue new initiatives with the help of Dr. Bruce Chassy (U of I ACES Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition). |

Water Management: Norman E. Borlaug FellowsThe Office of International Programs welcomed four North African Fellows who arrived on campus November 13, 2010 to participate in a month-long training on water management at the University of Illinois. The four scholars - Anis Bousselmi, Fouad Elame, Thouraya Mellah, and Issam Nouiri - participated in the USDA-FAS Norman E. Borlaug Felloship Program, in which they worked with assigned ACES faculty as their advisors. Dr. Kalita Prasanta nad Dr. Richard Cooke of the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering and Dr. Nick Brozovic of Agricultural and Consumer Economics spent the month serving as their advisors and taking them on field tours throughout the state. |
