Singh Elected as 2012 Foreign Fellow to NAAS, India

Dr. Ram Singh, an agronomist in soybean cytogentics in the Department of Crop Sciences, has been elected as a Foreign Fellow to the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), New Delhi, India. The award ceremony will be held on June 5, 2012, in New Delhi.

Since receiving his Ph. D. in plant cytogenetics from Colorado State University, Fort Collins in 1974, Dr. Ram Singh has travelled the world conducting research in plant cytogenetics. He joined the College of ACES in 1983.

Dr. Singh has patented his methodology for wide hybridization of the soybean, and he is the only scientist conducting this research in the world. He has authored two books on plant cytogenetics, edited six books (grain legumes, cereals, vegetable crops, oilseed crops, forage crops and medicinal plants) in a series “Genetic Resources, Chromosome Engineering, and Crop Improvement,” and published numerous scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals.

This honor is the latest in a long list for Singh that includes, most recently, The Illinois Soybean Association’s Excellence in Soybean Research Award, 2010, and the College of ACES Professional Staff Award for Excellence-Research, 2009.
